Storytelling
This story conveys the meaning behind a drum. It is told by my father-in-law, an elder in our community. Passing on traditional culture through storytelling is vital to the preservation of the Yup'ik Culture. Children enjoy listening to these stories because these are elders that they know and respect.

- Students could record more object stories like these
- Use objects important to students from home to tell their own stories
- Retell the elder's stories
- Relate to the stories by journaling what it reminds them of

Song: To Express Yourself
This hip hop song portrays the lost of native language and how it influences native identity. The style of music and the lyrics are easy for my students and community members to relate too.
How I will use this activity:
- Discuss with younger students before showing
- Let students discuss how it makes them feel when their grandparent speak it and they cannot understand it.
- Journal or pair share - How do they feel when other kids speak Yugtun and they cannot understand them.
- Do students want to learn Yugtun? How could they learn?

Arctic Stories
This website if filled with video stories by scientists and people who have had real experiences with wildlife and the culture of northern Alaska. I chose to include this site because students will love the photos of Alaskan animals and nature. My students will be interested in seeing people that look similar to them and live in a different remote part of Alaska.
How I will use this activity:
- Compare cultures
- Discuss in pairs and share
- K-W-L chart- What do you already know? Want to learn? What did you learn?
- Journal connections with the text
- Use videos to introduce science themes, habitat, mammals, birds, climate change, Alaskan cultures

I included the lesson for emergent readers that I taught in class because these are techniques based on research methods that really work in my classroom. I had fun teaching the lesson to my classmates and I know that elementary students would enjoy this lesson as well.
How I will use this activity:
This Emergent Literacy is packed with research based activities that help limited English learners retain learning. I would download and conduct the detailed lesson above and use the brown button above to access the book that accompanies the lesson. There are many books that are accessible through the link above and students will love having picture books read by someone else besides the teacher.
